Local police adoption of Taser equipment

Local governments in Italy and Spain are considering or implementing the introduction of Tasers as non-lethal equipment for police forces.

In Prato, Italy, City Councilor Jonathan Targetti proposed a formal motion to equip local police with electric pulse tools, arguing that current options like pepper spray may be insufficient for certain encounters. This follows similar measures approved in Milan.

In Badalona, Spain, Mayor Xavier García Albiol announced the integration of Taser pistols as part of a modernization plan to enhance security. The Mayor stated that “security is not negotiable” and emphasized the need for a force that is “prepared, equipped, and respected.” While intended to neutralize aggressors without fatal injuries, the decision has prompted debate regarding the necessity of rigorous supervision to prevent misuse. Municipal sources indicated that the weapons will be used under strict protocols and specific training to ensure proportional application.

In Italy, the Misericordia di Campi Bisenzio is hosting a conference to discuss the operational profiles and legal responsibilities regarding Taser use. The event includes speakers from the Siulp union and the author of the manual ‘Il Taser’, Armando Albano, who is donating copies of his publication to the Florence Questura.

In Switzerland, the Federal Council has initiated a consultation to provide a legal basis for transport police to use Tasers. The proposed legislative adjustments also include regulating bodycams and real-time video surveillance on vehicles, potentially utilizing artificial intelligence for analysis during a proposed five-year trial period.
