Luxury river cruise fleet expansions
Overview
Luxury river cruise operators are continuing significant fleet expansions scheduled through the late 2020s.
Tauck is progressing with its multi-phase investment to increase capacity by more than 50%. As part of this renewal program, the MS Harmonie is set to join the French fleet on the Rhône River in 2028. The vessel will accommodate up to 130 passengers and include a Sun Deck with a pool and a fitness center.
Uniworld is also expanding its reach. Following the planned 2027 launch of the SS Marlene, the company has announced a 2028 program that adds three new vessels, bringing its total fleet to 22 ships. These include the SS Helen for the Danube, the SS Clara for the Rhine, and the Mekong Mystique to expand its presence on the Mekong River. This expansion includes new long-distance itineraries, such as a 30-day journey from Amsterdam to the Black Sea.
In the United States, American Cruise Lines is developing two U.S.-built ships at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Maryland. The American Beauty is scheduled for the Mississippi River in 2028, and the American Rhapsody is set for the Columbia and Snake Rivers in 2029. Both ships will accommodate 180 guests and feature amenities such as top-deck lounges and a 1,500-square-foot Signature Suite.
Other industry developments include Viking’s expansion of its Nile fleet and AmaWaterways’ scheduled 2027 debut of the AmaRudi on the Danube, which is positioned as Europe’s largest river cruise ship.
Celebrity Cruises is entering the luxury river market with custom-designed vessels for the Rhine, Danube, and Seine, utilizing ocean-inspired designs like ‘Infinite Veranda’ staterooms. Additionally, Riverside Luxury Cruises will launch 14-night Danube voyages in 2027 tailored for cycling enthusiasts, utilizing the Riverside Mozart to provide bicycle storage and e-bike rentals.
