Älvsjö sports facility shooting investigation
Overview
A shooting at the Kämpetorpshallarna sports complex in Älvsjö, southern Stockholm, resulted in the death of Saba Abraham, a 24-year-old youth worker and football coach for the City of Stockholm. The incident occurred on a Friday evening around 21:00 while hundreds of young people were present for football and floorball matches. Police confirmed the victim was shot on an upper level of a hall separate from where the matches were being held.
Police reclassified the investigation from attempted murder to murder. Several teenagers are in custody, including two from the Gothenburg area who have no prior criminal records and are also suspected of preparing another murder. Most recently, an additional person has been detained in connection with the case; this individual is suspected of aggravated arson in Huddinge municipality occurring one week prior to the murder, though the connection between the two crimes remains unclear.
Investigators suggest the motive may be linked to the victim’s brother, who reportedly has ties to criminal networks in the Älvsjö area. Specifically, police indicate the brother has been a target on a ‘death list’ associated with the Dalen network. Recent reports suggest the motive may also be revenge related to the brother's criminal activities and recent legal acquittals.
District director Lee Orberson described Abraham as a ‘highly respected colleague’ who had a ‘significant positive impact on children in the area.’ Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer described the shooting as ‘extremely reckless’ and ‘very unpleasant.’ Local officials and Hammarby Fotboll have activated crisis support for the youth present during the attack.
