Maextro V800 brake pedal safety controversy

Overview

The Maextro (also referred to as Zunjie) V800 luxury electric MPV, a collaboration between Huawei and JAC Motors, has come under scrutiny following safety tests conducted by the automotive platform Dongchedi. Testing revealed that the brake-pedal support brackets fractured during emergency braking from 100 km/h, with one failure causing braking distance to increase from 38 meters to 140 meters. Technical discussions have focused on the bracket construction, specifically the use of engineering plastic or glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (PP+GF40) which appeared to have insufficient reinforcement. While initial reports suggested a peak force of 4,589 N, Dongchedi clarified the actual force at the time of breakage was 1,612 N. In response, the manufacturer stated that its braking systems meet or exceed national and industry standards, suggesting the testing involved extreme conditions. Maextro noted that the findings applied to specific samples rather than the entire production series. The company has committed to redesigning the component and providing free upgrades or retrofitting to existing owners. The controversy has escalated into a formal regulatory matter. Three Chinese government agencies—the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), and the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR)—have launched a joint investigation into the vehicle. Richard Yu, Chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, responded to the incident by stating that “justice may be delayed, but it will never be absent,” asserting that no such failures have occurred during actual customer use. The situation has caused significant market volatility for JAC Motors. Following an initial decline, JAC shares rose by their daily limit of 9.98% on October 16, 2026, as the investigation was announced. The incident also involved a critical article from the media account ‘Xinjiang Release’ and reports that Dongchedi is under investigation for unfair competition.

Claims

What the coverage asserts, and how many sources carry each claim.

Coverage disagrees

Sources make claims that cannot both be true. CLSTR reports the disagreement; it does not decide who is right.

  • "The Maextro V800 braking system meets national and industry standards, and no failures have been reported in actual customer use."

    vs

"Three Maextro V800 vehicles experienced brake pedal bracket fractures during emergency braking tests from 100 km/h."

One claim asserts that brake pedal bracket fractures occurred during testing, while the other asserts the braking system meets standards and has no reported failures.
