Magic: The Gathering Zeta Set collaboration
Overview
Initial reports regarding ‘The Zeta Set’ emerged via Scryfall, indicating a mysterious Magic: The Gathering collaboration with the art collective MSCHF. Early information suggested the set would consist of 121 unique reprints, including high-value cards like Darksteel Monolith and Oboro, Palace in the Cloud.
Wizards of the Coast later officially announced the set, noting it is the first Secret Lair release to be sold in booster packs. The collection features black-and-white, playtest-style art inspired by Richard Garfield’s original Alpha development cards. Boosters, priced at $19.92 each, were scheduled to be available through the Secret Lair Chaos Vault starting September 2, with a purchase limit of 12 per person.
Following the launch, Wizards of the Coast issued an apology, describing the sale as ‘a disaster’ due to significant technical failures on its Secret Lair retail platform. Customers reported malfunctions in the queue system, difficulties placing orders, missing order confirmations, and random cancellations. Although the sale was paused for ninety minutes to investigate, the product sold out shortly after resuming. The company is currently investigating whether the root cause was an internal systems issue or external tampering.
