Maltańskie Estate land and eviction dispute
Overview
A legal and social conflict has emerged in the Maltańskie Estate in Poznań following the Archdiocese of Poznań’s acquisition and subsequent sale of land to JHM Development for 421 million PLN. The developer intends to construct approximately 2,000 apartments on the site.
The dispute began with legal actions by the Archdiocese, which filed a lawsuit against a local family seeking over 17,000 PLN for the unauthorized use of a plot. This case is part of a broader conflict involving roughly 160 legal cases regarding properties in the estate. The Archdiocese significantly increased monthly land charges from 58.56 PLN to 2,946 PLN, citing market rates.
Conflict escalated into physical demonstrations when police and bailiffs attempted to evict a resident who has lived in the area since 1993. Protesters, including activists, used barricades and occupied roofs to block access, shouting slogans such as ‘Maltańskie zostaje’ (Malta remains) and ‘Hańba’ (Shame). Police used shields to clear a path for the bailiff, while an anti-conflict team was deployed to manage the situation.
Following these confrontations, where over 60 people were identified and two individuals were reportedly injured, the Maltańskie Nasz Dom Association has appealed to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Karol Nawrocki for intervention. The association claims approximately 200 families are at risk of losing their homes. Residents have also criticized the Poznań local government, alleging that officials have limited their involvement to discussions rather than providing substantive support to prevent homelessness.
