Martínez-Bordiú Franco family Pazo de Meirás auction

Overview

The Martínez-Bordiú Franco family has completed an auction of approximately 700 items at Magna Art Auctions in Madrid, following the property's transfer to the State. The collection, removed from the Pazo de Meirás, included paintings, furniture, ceramics, and photographs related to Francisco Franco.

The auction concluded with total earnings exceeding 500,000 euros. Despite the auction house noting that many items were of medium quality and resembled common household goods, the event saw high demand, leaving only 12 lots unsold. Magna Art Auctions described the sale as a “resounding and magnificent success,” reporting an “avalanche” of bids during the first day.

Significant sales included a collection of eight shotguns for 20,000 euros, the highest price achieved, and a personal brown leather briefcase belonging to Francisco Franco, which sold for 19,000 euros after starting at 350 euros. A 1970 photograph of former King Juan Carlos I with a dedication to Franco also sold for 8,000 euros. Other sold items included military portraits and a 17th-century Talavera de la Reina enameled ceramic pitcher.

Prior to the sale, the Commission for the Recovery of Historical Memory (CRMH) had requested government intervention, seeking inspections to determine if any items were “public domain assets subject to legal protection” to prevent the sale of public property.
