Martyr remains recovery operations in Vietnam, Cambodia, and
Overview
Efforts to recover and identify the remains of war martyrs continue across various regions in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.
In Dong Thap, the K91 Team has recovered 112 sets of remains, with 47 located in Cambodia’s Pursat and Pray Veng provinces and 65 within Vietnam. To aid identification, the team has collected nearly 1,400 biological samples for DNA testing. Officials noted that urbanization and the fading memories of elderly witnesses have complicated the search, though the mission is expected to be completed ahead of its April 2027 deadline.
In Quang Ngai, the K53 Team has been dispatched for the 2026–2027 dry season to search southern Laos (Champasac, Attapư, and Sê Kông) and Cambodia’s Ratanakiri province. This 67-person mission aims to recover at least 20 sets of remains. Additionally, authorities in Dak Lak recovered the remains of martyr Nguyen Van Giai, a Quang Ngai native who died in 1972, following information from a fellow veteran.
In Dong Nai, the K76 Team recovered four sets of remains at Loc Ninh Airport, bringing the local total to 47. Search efforts in Cambodia recently recovered three sets of remains in Kampong Cham, one in Kratie, and four in Pailin. In Quang Tri province, a mass grave containing two sets of remains was discovered near an Agribank branch; the remains were found alongside military artifacts and are believed to have been killed by a bunker-collapsing bomb.
In Can Tho, Steering Committee 515 reburied 38 sets of remains on August 26. The city has collected 2,402 biological samples for DNA testing toward a target of 5,092.
