Chalkidiki student dies after school cardiac arrest
Overview
On September 18, a 17-year-old student in Pefkochori, Chalkidiki, fell into critical condition following a cardiac arrest at his school. During a break, the student collapsed in the courtyard in front of teachers and classmates, prompting a 50-minute resuscitation effort by school staff, a local physician, and EKAV paramedics.
Despite seven defibrillations and continuous CPR, the student suffered a second cardiac arrest during transport. He was moved to the Coronary Care Unit at Hippokrateio Hospital in Thessaloniki, where he was treated for severe cerebral edema and hemodynamic instability. Despite intensive medical efforts, the student passed away on the morning of Sunday, September 20.
Following the death, the Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports expressed condolences to the family. The Ministry announced that psychologists and social workers would be deployed to the school on Monday to provide support to students and staff. An investigation into the exact circumstances and causes of the cardiac arrest is currently underway.
