Petr Yan retains bantamweight title at UFC 333

Overview

The bantamweight title trilogy between Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili concluded at UFC 333 on October 24 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Petr Yan successfully defended his championship, defeating Dvalishvili via unanimous decision after five rounds. All three judges scored the bout 48-47 in favor of Yan.

Dvalishvili employed a high-tempo strategy, attempting a record 58 takedowns during the contest, though he successfully completed only five. Although the Georgian fighter appeared to control the first two rounds, Yan gained the advantage through striking exchanges. He utilized precise combinations and effective body work, specifically during the third round, after landing a significant body kick to take control.

Yan finished the fight having landed 94 of 206 significant strikes while successfully defending against further takedown attempts. Following the victory, Yan noted that his corner advised him that winning the final three rounds would secure the win. UFC President Dana White awarded $100,000 ‘Fight of the Night’ bonuses to both fighters.

The decision drew significant reaction from Ilia Topuria, who expressed disbelief regarding the scorecards and offered support to his Georgian compatriot, Dvalishvili. Following the bout, Dana White noted that the bantamweight division is evaluating potential challengers for Yan’s next defense, with Song Yadong and Sean O’Malley mentioned as possible candidates.

In response to the result, Sean O’Malley expressed surprise that Yan did not call him out during his post-fight interview, describing a potential matchup between the two as ‘the biggest fight to make.’ O’Malley defended Yan’s performance against Topuria’s criticism, noting Yan’s successful takedown defense and significant body strikes. O’Malley also used his platform to critique Daniel Cormier’s commentary during the event.
