Meta expands parental supervision tools across platforms

Overview

Meta has expanded its parental supervision tools for Threads into Vietnam. Integrated within the Meta Family Center, these features allow parents and guardians to monitor and manage the digital activities of teenagers, including tracking daily usage, setting time limits, and managing privacy settings.

This expansion follows previous updates to Meta’s teen account protections on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, which utilize content protection criteria similar to ‘13+ film ratings’ to mitigate risks.

WhatsApp has now officially introduced parental control tools for users aged 13 and older. To activate supervision, a shared procedure is required, such as scanning a QR code between two smartphones, ensuring the connection is an explicit, shared choice. Once linked, guardians can set usage limits and manage specific privacy settings, such as controlling who can view a minor’s profile photo or add them to contacts. Parents can also monitor activity on ‘status’ updates and receive alerts when a child joins or exits a group.

Despite these oversight capabilities, WhatsApp maintains end-to-end encryption. Parents remain unable to read personal messages, listen to calls, or enter group chats. While the tools provide digital safety, experts suggest they should complement parental dialogue rather than replace it, noting that maintaining privacy is essential for a teenager’s autonomy and emotional development.
