Mexican Day of the Dead 2026 preparations

Overview

Various regions in Mexico have announced programs for the 2026 Day of the Dead celebrations. In Guanajuato, festivities will span seven regions, including the eighth Day of the Dead Festival featuring the ‘Tapete de la Muerte’ art exhibition and a parade of Catrinas, with Japan serving as the guest country. Other regional activities include the ‘Halloween Zoo’ in León, the ‘Festival de las Almas’ in Salvatierra and Abasolo, and the seventh edition of the Calaverandia theme park in Guadalajara, which features large-scale nocturnal installations and multimedia shows.

In Tláhuac, the International Day of the Dead Festival (FIDDEM) is scheduled from October 30 to November 2. Presented by Mayor Berenice Hernández Calderón, the event will feature the Chinese community as the guest nation and is expected to draw over 3 million people, generating an economic impact exceeding 200 million pesos. In Mexico City, the Feria de las Calacas at CENART will offer over 380 free activities, alongside a Grand Day of the Dead Parade on October 31 and a monumental 32-meter tall Catrina sculpture in the Zócalo.

Agricultural updates show a record production of nearly 10 million cempasúchil plants in Xochimilco, a 53.8 percent increase from last year, while Puebla continues to lead national production. However, a cold front in Campeche has caused a banana leaf shortage. Regarding the academic calendar, the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) has confirmed a four-day school break for preschool, primary, and secondary students from October 30 to November 2, coinciding with the School Technical Council sessions.
