Mexican electoral tribunal rulings on political violence
Overview
Mexican electoral tribunals continue to issue rulings regarding political violence and legal protections. In Cuautlancingo, Puebla, the Mexico City Regional Chamber of the Federal Electoral Tribunal (TEPJF) overturned a decision by the Puebla State Electoral Tribunal that had dismissed complaints from councilwoman Evelyn Camela Hernández. The TEPJF found the local investigation insufficient and fragmented, ordering a reinvestigation into allegations that Hernández faced obstacles in her duties, such as a lack of equipment and being ignored by municipal staff.
In other cases, the Electoral Tribunal of the State of Mexico (TEEM) reprimanded the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in Tenancingo de Degollado for violating child privacy rights by using identifiable images of minors on social media. Additionally, the TEPJF overturned local Veracruz rulings against community journalist Élfego Riveros, determining his actions did not constitute political violence based on gender to prevent such allegations from being used to silence indigenous media.
Conversely, the Electoral Tribunal of Veracruz (TEV) recently dismissed a complaint of “political violence against women based on gender” and “slander” filed by Mara Yamileth Chama Villa. Chama Villa, a former candidate in Teocelo, alleged a coordinated campaign of threats and revictimization via journalistic articles. However, the TEV concluded there was no evidence to support the accusations and subsequently lifted previous precautionary measures.
