Mexican urban biodiversity and conservation initiatives

Urban parks and environmental organizations in Mexico are implementing various programs to promote biodiversity and wildlife conservation.

In Guadalajara, the Agencia Metropolitana de Bosques Urbanos (AMBU) has hosted over 66,000 visitors through guided tours of ecosystems like Parque Agua Azul. These tours feature a butterfly house, an aviary with 30 species, a macaw garden, and an orchidarium containing 58 species. Similarly, in Cozumel, the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel, in partnership with ‘Pajareando Cozumel’, has organized bird-watching sessions at Parque Urbano Corazón to teach citizens how to identify species through song and physical characteristics.

Conservation efforts have expanded to include specialized educational initiatives and fauna protection. In San Pedro Garza García, the ‘Hongosto’ program focuses on educating the public about the Fungi Kingdom. In Morelia, the Benito Juárez Zoological Park coordinates with the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) to rescue and relocate urban fauna affected by construction.

Newer municipal measures focus on training and formal recognition. In Bahía de Banderas, authorities and civil organizations have provided specialized training for the ‘Patrulla Verde’ (Green Patrol) regarding the responsible handling of wildlife in inhabited areas. Additionally, the municipality of Corregidora, Querétaro, introduced the ‘Sello Biodiversidad’ (Biodiversity Seal) to recognize the protection of water, soil, and pollinators in gardens, companies, and public buildings, framing environmental conservation as a complement to economic development.
