Mexico expands autism support across states
Overview
In early July 2026, Jalisco enacted a law establishing a statewide network of autism‑specialized centers, the first Mexican state to codify comprehensive support for autistic children and youth. The initiative quickly spread. By late July, the municipal government of Zacapu, Michoacán began construction of a Municipal Autism Center, a project led by municipal president Mónica Valdez Pulido and DIF officials, aimed at delivering local diagnostic and therapeutic services and eliminating long travel for families. In the same period, Tabasco received the Centro de Recursos para la Atención Integral del Espectro del Autismo (CRIAT), a 2,400‑square‑metre facility built with a 76‑million‑peso investment from Pemex and operated by the state DIF, offering therapy rooms, a hydro‑massage pool, vocational workshops and a mobile medical unit.
The rollout continued in early August when Yucatán Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena inaugurated the Intersecretarial Commission for the Attention and Protection of Autistic Persons and opened the state's first Sensory Regulation Room within the government palace. The governor, together with DIF Honorary President Wendy Méndez Naal, announced that construction of a State Autism Center will commence shortly, expanding diagnostic, therapeutic and comprehensive support services throughout Yucatán.
These actions illustrate a rapid, multi‑state expansion of autism‑focused health, education and inclusion services across Mexico, building on Jalisco’s pioneering legislation.
