Mexico Culture Ministry expands summer arts program
Entities: Secretaría de Cultura del Gobierno de México · Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura · Claudia Curiel de Icaza
Overview
In early July 2026 the Mexican Secretariat of Culture announced a free summer theatre programme for children and early teenagers, run through the Centro Cultural Helénico. By late July, facing federal budget cuts, the Secretariat restructured its finances, securing 600,000 pesos from the federal PROFEST program to keep the Hay Festival Querétaro and other major festivals operating, while transferring some historic‑building work to the Public Works Secretariat.
The agency also rolled out the national "Alas y Raíces" summer initiative, offering 152 free artistic and cultural activities in 19 states and presenting the immersive theatrical rally "Onírico Ojos del Bosque" in multiple Mexico City venues from 30 July to 16 August 2026.
On 27 July, the Secretariat, in partnership with the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (INBAL), announced a 21‑million‑peso investment for school performing‑arts projects. Seventy proposals were selected for the 2026‑2027 school year, covering primary and secondary schools in 32 states and including mediation activities to foster creativity, critical thinking and holistic development among children and adolescents.
Together, these steps show the Secretariat’s shift from a localized summer theatre offering to a broader, financially adjusted programme that preserves festival operations and expands free cultural and educational activities for youth across the country.
