Michael Jordan memorabilia auction records
Overview
High-profile memorabilia and assets belonging to Michael Jordan have recently achieved record-breaking prices at auction and through private transactions.
A signed red jersey worn by Jordan during Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz sold for $14 million in a private transaction facilitated by Hunt Auctions. Purchased by Miami-based real estate investor Ron Firman, the sale marks the highest price ever paid for a basketball collectible. David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, noted that Jordan’s memorabilia has transitioned into an “elite class of investment assets comparable to iconic works of art.” While a record for basketball items, it is the second-highest price ever paid for a game-worn jersey, following a $24.12 million sale of a Babe Ruth jersey in 2024.
In that specific game, Jordan scored 37 points to help the Bulls secure a 93-88 victory, evening the series at 1-1. The Bulls eventually won the championship 4-2. This transaction marks at least the third time a jersey from Jordan’s 1998 Finals series has exceeded $10 million.
Previously, a white jersey from Game 3 of the 1998 NBA Finals sold for $12.26 million, noted as the only known white jersey from that series in the public domain.
In the automotive sector, Jordan’s 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello sold for $2.7 million, setting a record for that specific model and significantly exceeding initial estimates of $700,000 to $1.3 million. The Rosso Corsa vehicle, which featured a custom-modified driver’s seat to accommodate Jordan’s height, was sold after being held in a private California collection for approximately 25 years.
