Middle East heatwave July–August 2026

Overview

In early July 2026, Egypt experienced a heatwave with temperatures reaching 42 °C and high humidity, prompting concerns about public health and comfort. By the end of July, the heatwave persisted across the region, with Jordan reporting a hot air mass that pushed temperatures 4‑5 °C above seasonal norms. Peak readings hit 45.1 °C at Al‑Azraq, and the heat affected the Badia, Jordan Valley, Dead Sea area, and Aqaba. Authorities in Jordan issued advisories to limit outdoor activities, avoid open flames, and protect vulnerable groups, while forecasting a gradual retreat of the hot air mass later in the week. Similar conditions were noted in the Ramallah region, where temperatures remained approximately 3‑4 °C above the annual average. In late August, a significant heatwave returned to the region. Temperatures remained 4 to 5 degrees Celsius above the annual average, with very hot conditions persisting in the Badia, Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and Aqaba. Meteorological authorities issued additional warnings regarding low horizontal visibility caused by dust in the Badia regions. Public health advisories continued to urge citizens to increase fluid intake, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and exercise caution with flammable materials in vehicles or dry grass areas. By August 21, intense heat and high humidity continued to affect multiple regions. In Lebanon, hot air masses from the Arabian Peninsula pushed temperatures above seasonal averages, particularly in mountainous and inland areas. Palestine also faced intense heat, with temperatures projected to rise several degrees above annual averages through early next week. Meteorological departments issued warnings against prolonged sun exposure between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM, the risk of fires in dry grass, and the danger of leaving children or the elderly in closed vehicles.
