Mining industry development in Andalusia
Overview
The sixth edition of the Mining & Minerals Hall (MMH), held from October 20 to 22, 2026, at the FIBES Convention and Exhibition Centre in Seville, featured a record 332 exhibitors. This represents a 29% increase over the previous edition, occupying 100% of the available exhibition space and drawing participants from approximately 26 countries.
Andalusia continues to be positioned as a strategic mining hub, hosting 479 active mines that generate roughly 8,000 direct jobs and over 1.2 billion euros in production. The region is the European Union’s second-largest producer of primary copper and a global leader in strontium, controlling 43% of the market. Furthermore, the subsoil contains indications of 22 of the 34 critical raw materials required by the EU.
During the event, officials emphasized the mining potential of the Huelva province to attract European investment. Huelva is a key player due to the Iberian Pyrite Belt, described as ‘one of the most important metallogenetic provinces in the world.’
Discussions at the fair focused on securing mineral supplies for a digitalized economy and reducing European dependence on third countries. Participants addressed EU 2030 targets, which mandate that at least 10% of extraction, 25% of processing, and 40% of recycling needs be met within European territory. Commissioner Fernando Araúz de Robles highlighted the necessity of institutional support and business momentum to transform these resources into viable projects while ensuring sustainable mining practices.
