Mirandese cultural heritage preservation
Overview
Cultural initiatives focused on the preservation and promotion of Mirandese traditions and language are expanding across Portugal.
In Miranda do Douro, the Museu da Terra de Miranda has officially reopened following a four-year, two-million-euro renovation and expansion project. Largely funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), the project involved the acquisition of three adjacent properties. The museum now offers a new museological experience that places the Mirandese language on equal footing with Portuguese. The updated exhibitions highlight both material and immaterial heritage, including local history, arts, crafts, traditional clothing, music, and dance. The reopening program includes community performances, guided visits by the Grupo Etnográfico do Centro Cultural de Sendim, and a temporary exhibition titled ‘Ramos de Oferenda da Terra de Miranda’.
Additionally, the Sociedade Recreativa Operária will host the ‘Dia do Mirandês’ in Santarém on October 17. Supported by the municipalities of Santarém and Miranda do Douro, the event aims to promote the traditions of the Terras de Miranda. The program features bagpipe performances in the historic center, an exhibition of the ‘Capa de Honras Mirandesa’ at the Bernardo Santareno Reading Room, and a conference on the history and preservation of the Mirandese language. The celebration is set to conclude with a community dinner featuring traditional ‘posta mirandesa’ cuisine.
