Moldova-Romania energy interconnection project
Overview
The Moldovan government has approved a draft law to declare the construction of the 400 kV Strășeni–Gutinaș overhead power line and the modernization of the Strășeni 330 kV substation as works of national interest. This legislative move is intended to expedite legal and land expropriation procedures for the project.
Supported by a $130 million investment from the U.S. Government, the initiative has been named the ‘Trump Liberty Line’ following a proposal from the U.S. Embassy. The 190-kilometer high-voltage power line will consist of approximately 70 kilometers in Moldova—passing through 25 localities across the Strășeni, Călărași, Nisporeni, and Hîncești districts—and 120 kilometers in Romania. The project aims to connect the Strășeni station to the Romanian transport network via the Gutinaș station, thereby diversifying energy transport routes and integrating Moldova into the European energy system.
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan noted that the interconnection is critical for addressing energy deficits during peak consumption periods. By increasing Moldova's capacity to import energy from Romania, the project seeks to enhance energy security and independence by reducing reliance on the 400 kV connection that currently passes through Transnistria.
A working group involving the Moldovan Ministry of Energy, Moldelectrica, the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau, and Black & Veatch is coordinating construction. The project is expected to be completed by 2032, serving as the third 400 kV aerial interconnection between the two nations.
