Montenegrin education and research funding initiatives
Overview
Montenegro has introduced new initiatives to support higher education and scientific research. President Jakov Milatović announced the ‘Iskra’ presidential scholarship for the 2026/27 academic year, which provides 5,000 euros to 20 exceptional students studying at prestigious international universities. This scholarship fund was increased to 100,000 euros with support from MTEL to mark the 20th anniversary of Montenegro’s independence.
Additionally, Montenegrin institutions have secured 485,881 euros through the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program. These funds support four projects scheduled for 2026, including initiatives by the University of Montenegro regarding digital science and media, the City of Podgorica regarding urban heat resilience, and the University Donja Gorica focusing on research university transformation and artificial intelligence.
