Morena disciplinary case in Puebla escalates

Puebla state deputies Nayeli Salvatori and Grace Palomares, members of the ruling Morena party, were recorded making disparaging remarks about older men, describing them as “smelling like a trunk” and “rotting.” The comments triggered social‑media backlash and accusations of age‑based discrimination. Morena’s national president Ariadna Montiel ordered the party’s internal Commission for Honesty and Justice (CNHJ) to open a disciplinary investigation, suggesting possible suspension or expulsion and a ban from running as Morena candidates in the 2027 elections. Both deputies issued public apologies, and the Puebla governor expressed support for the party’s stance while emphasizing respect for older adults.

On 6 August 2026 the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) issued a formal condemnation, classifying the statements as hate speech and ageism and calling on the Puebla Congress to adopt stricter ethical codes.
