Motorsport Saudi Arabia events under security review

Overview

In early August 2026 the FIA said a decision on the World Rally Championship season‑ending rally in Saudi Arabia would be taken by mid‑September, citing the escalating Middle‑East conflict and logistical challenges. FIA road‑sport director Emilia Abel said the body was working with promoters and teams and would be ready to shift the event if security deteriorated.

Formula E chief executive Jeff Dodds confirmed the 2026‑27 season was still slated to open with two races in Jeddah on 18‑19 December, but the series would move the opener to Mexico City on 16 January if the Houthi naval blockade or other regional developments made the Saudi start untenable. Dodds added that cars and equipment would be shipped only after the latest security assessment and that no alternative December race would replace a cancelled Saudi event; the season would simply begin in January.

The WRC also expects a decision by mid‑September. Should the Saudi rally be cancelled, the championship is weighing European alternatives such as a Catalonia rally, an asphalt event at Monza or a rally on Cyprus. Toyota team principal Jari‑Matti Latvala stressed that safety must come first, noting the parallel scrutiny of other series.

All series will finalize their calendars after mid‑September, reflecting a broader reassessment of Middle‑East motorsport slots amid ongoing security concerns.
