Mountain rescue operations in the Balkans

Overview

Emergency services have conducted several successful rescue operations for hikers in mountainous regions of the Balkans.

In the Sharr Mountains, a coordinated effort between North Macedonia and Kosovo resulted in the rescue of two Czech hikers from Piribeg Peak. The individuals had sought shelter due to severe weather, including heavy rain and dense fog. Because visibility prevented helicopter use, the Crisis Management Center worked with the Kosovo Mountain Rescue Service to extract the hikers via the Brezovica ski center.

In a separate incident on Kamešnica mountain, the Mountain Rescue Service of Herceg-Bosna Canton rescued two Croatian citizens who lost their orientation near Goli vrh. The two men, approximately 20 years old, were hiking from the top of Konj toward the Croatian border when they became stuck on extremely inaccessible terrain. The rescue was facilitated by 13 members of the Mountain Rescue Service (GSS) who were already conducting a regular rock rescue exercise. According to Tomislav Tadić of the GSS, the hikers were in good physical condition and sustained no injuries.

Search operations continue in Slovenia for 19-year-old Jakov Vučetić, a Serbian citizen missing while attempting to climb Mount Triglav. Vučetić reportedly lost contact after informing his family that his phone battery was low and that he had encountered a snowstorm. Rescue teams have located a backpack containing a tent and a heater at an altitude of approximately 2,130 meters. While footprints were spotted descending to 1,900 meters, heavy winds have since obscured them. Severe weather, including snow, rain, fog, and high winds, has forced rescuers to operate on foot, as helicopters remain on standby until conditions improve.
