Nacional Monte de Piedad strike ends after 364 days
Overview
A nationwide labor strike at Nacional Monte de Piedad, which began on October 1, 2025, and resulted in the closure of 302 branches, has concluded after 364 days. The dispute between the institution and the National Union of Workers of Nacional Monte de Piedad centered on disagreements regarding the interpretation and fulfillment of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with roots tracing back to a 2021 salary review.
Although a February 2026 judicial ruling declared the strike nonexistent, the union filed a review appeal, prolonging the closure. Mediation efforts by the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS) continued throughout the conflict. To mitigate the impact on clients, the institution provided digital channels and extended deadlines for payments or renewals on items originally scheduled for sale in October 2026 until March 2027.
On September 30, 2026, the union and the institution reached a comprehensive agreement mediated by the STPS. The agreement, which requires ratification by the Federal Center for Conciliation and Labor Registration, allows for the reopening of more than 300 branches starting October 7.
To assist affected customers, Nacional Monte de Piedad announced it will suspend interest charges for 45 calendar days beginning from the reopening date. Furthermore, the institution will apply discounts to interest generated during the strike period, based on individual client histories. The resolution aims to restore full services, including pawning, renewals, payments, and the recovery of pledged items.
