National Geographic documentary on Chilean mine rescue
Overview
National Geographic and Disney+ have announced a three-part documentary series, “Chilean Mine Rescue: Race Against Time,” chronicling the 2010 San José copper-gold mine disaster in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Produced by Blast Films, the series details the 69-day ordeal of 33 miners trapped nearly half a mile underground following a catastrophic collapse on August 5, 2010.
The production features previously unseen cell phone footage recorded by the miners while trapped, providing a rare perspective on their survival. Survivors, including Alex Vega, recount the experience of being trapped in darkness and the moment a drill broke through to their chamber after 17 days of silence. The series includes interviews with survivors, family members, and rescue teams, marking the first time several miners have appeared in an international documentary.
Directors Chloe Campbell and James Parris stated the series aims to move beyond standard news coverage by focusing on human elements, the long-term psychological effects, and the collective engineering effort. The documentary highlights high-stakes technical complexities, such as the use of unconventional “cluster hammers” to speed up the rescue and the eventual use of the Phoenix rescue capsule to bring the men to the surface. The series is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on September 26, with availability on National Geographic, Hulu, and Disney+.
