National Identity conference in Alexandria

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina hosted the three-day conference ‘National Identity: Deep Roots and a Renewed Vision’ from September 21 to 23, 2026. Held under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the event addressed modern challenges to cultural identity, including the influence of social media, artificial intelligence, and the discourse of political Islam.

During the proceedings, experts discussed how certain political Islamist ideologies have historically challenged the nation-state concept in favor of transnational ideologies. Discussions also touched upon the stability of Egyptian identity amidst economic pressures, noting that remittances from citizens abroad serve as a demonstration of national cohesion. To highlight cultural heritage, the Ministry of Social Solidarity organized the ‘Diyaruna’ exhibition, showcasing traditional handicrafts.

The conference concluded with the issuance of the ‘Bibliotheca Alexandrina National Identity Document,’ a roadmap featuring ten key recommendations. These include treating national identity as an integrated project beginning with the family and school, and preparing teachers to instill identity values in students. Dr. Abdel Aziz Qansoua, Minister of Higher Education and Acting Minister of Culture, stated that the Ministry will adopt these recommendations within universities, including initiatives for enlightenment convoys to rural areas and support for purposeful content creators.

Officials emphasized that maintaining Egyptian identity is a matter of national security. Major General Khaled Fouda, Advisor to the President for Local Development, noted the conference provided a vital space for dialogue on challenges facing the Egyptian character. Plans are underway to hold the conference annually and expand its reach to various governorates and Egyptians living abroad.
