Netflix decade of production in South Korea
Overview
Netflix marked its 10th anniversary in South Korea through various celebrations and industry reports. During the 31st Busan International Film Festival, the company hosted the 3rd ‘Creative Asia’ program, providing masterclasses for over 400 emerging filmmakers. Since 2016, Netflix has collaborated with over 80 domestic production companies to create more than 200 Korean titles, with over 200 Korean works reaching the global Top 10 list since 2021. Asia-Pacific content now accounts for over 50% of the platform’s global non-English Top 10 list.
To celebrate this milestone, Netflix hosted ‘Netflix Janchi’ (Netflix Feast), a two-day fan festival at the Culture Depot in Mapo-gu, Seoul. The event drew approximately 10,000 attendees and 3.58 million online viewers. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos attended the celebration, reaffirming the company’s commitment to the Korean entertainment industry and noting that approximately 80 percent of global members have watched Korean programming.
The festival featured high-profile stars, including the cast of ‘Squid Game’ (Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, and Park Hae-soo) and stars from upcoming projects such as Song Hye Kyo and Gong Yoo. Previews were provided for titles including ‘Tantara’, ‘Possible Love’, ‘Grand Galaxy Hotel’, ‘Beauty in the Beast’, ‘All of Us Are Dead’ season 2, and a live-action ‘Solo Leveling’.
Economically, Netflix Korea reported its first year of annual revenue exceeding 1 trillion won, reaching 1.054 trillion won last year. While the platform has expanded the local creative ecosystem, discussions persist regarding the extent to which this growth is reinvested into the domestic production industry.
