Nigerian Army structural expansion and deployment

Overview

The Nigerian Army is undergoing a structural expansion and increased deployment to address regional security threats. Following presidential approval to expand the military structure from eight to 12 divisions, the Gombe State Government pledged support for the operationalization of new formations, including the 27 Armoured Brigade and specific tank battalions in Bajoga and Kaltungo.

Recent deployments have targeted persistent threats such as banditry, communal clashes, and kidnapping. In Plateau State, the 236 Tank Battalion deployed 236 personnel to Headquarters Sector 8 under ‘Operation Enduring Peace’ to reinforce rural settlements and improve response times in areas affected by farmer-herder conflicts. In Kebbi State, Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu operationalized the 28 Armoured Brigade and Garrison in Birnin Kebbi, supported by the 281 Tank Battalion in Yauri and the 381 Artillery Regiment in Kaoje to provide enhanced fire support in the North-West.

Expansion efforts have also extended to Nasarawa and Oyo states. In Nasarawa, the 4 Special Forces Command commissioned a renovated Garrison Headquarters at the Nigerian Army Cantonment in Doma to improve administrative efficiency. In Oyo State, the military approved four new formations—including a brigade and battalion in Oyo town, an infantry battalion in Kishi, an artillery regiment battalion in Iseyin, and a battalion in Oriire—to reduce response times to local communities.
