Nigerian political realignment ahead of 2027 elections

Overview

Leading up to the 2027 general elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has seen significant growth through political defections in Oyo and Kogi states. In Kogi State, approximately 500 members from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defected to the APC during an empowerment programme. In Oyo State, political tensions have escalated. The APC has criticized Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration, labeling his recent media engagement a “waste of time” and accusing him of neglecting critical issues. Violence also emerged following the killing of Ridwan Adeyemo, an APC member, leading the Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation (SSACO) to accuse Governor Makinde and Allied People’s Movement (APM) candidate Bimbo Adekanmbi of failing to restrain violent elements. Efforts toward APC unity continue as former governorship candidate Senator Teslim Kolawole Folarin has declared his support for the party’s candidate, Senator Sharafadeen Alli. Following this, Alli’s campaign organization issued warnings to Governor Makinde regarding fiscal management, cautioning against “reckless spending” and the pursuit of a reported N100 billion commercial bank loan. Governor Makinde, acting as the APM presidential candidate, has outlined a ‘Reset Nigeria Agenda’ focusing on education, Niger Delta militancy, and economic restructuring. However, his leadership is facing mounting pressure; six APM state chairmen from the South-South region have passed a vote of no confidence in him, accusing him of sidelining party structures and mishandling funds. Additionally, Makinde’s administration in Oyo State has seen a wave of resignations, including his security aide, Kabiru Salami, bringing the total number of recent departures to 13. Amidst this internal friction, Makinde has continued to promote his ‘Reset Nigeria’ agenda through town hall meetings in Ondo and Akwa Ibom states, calling for a “national rebirth” and promising tax incentives for entrepreneurs.
