The story involves investigating mysteries surrounding Spirit Stones and features historical and fictional figures, including the swordsman Yagyu Jubei and a Spanish diplomat named Rodrigo.

Gameplay additions include a new open-field map representing a wasteland affected by the ‘Crucible’, where players encounter yokai, human insurgents, and foreign alchemists. New mechanics include the ‘Hoko & Shield’ weapon archetype for both Samurai and Ninja playstyles, new progression systems, and offensive tools. For endgame players, the expansion offers the ‘Enlightened One’s Journey’ high-difficulty mode and ‘Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scrolls’, which provide customizable combat arenas with special modifiers.

Access to this content requires players to have completed at least one full playthrough of the base game. Additionally, the expansion coincides with an apparel collaboration with EDWIN, while a second DLC, ‘Amakusa Rebellion’ (previously ‘Bloody Insurrection’), remains in development.
