No Man's Sky tenth anniversary and development updates
Overview
Hello Games is marking the 10th anniversary of its space exploration title, No Man’s Sky. Originally launched in 2016 to criticism regarding technical issues and missing features, the game has undergone a redemption through approximately 40 large-scale, free updates. To celebrate the milestone, the studio announced an upcoming major update titled ‘Cosmos’.
Studio founder Sean Murray has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to providing free content updates rather than utilizing paid DLC or microtransactions. Murray noted that while this approach may not be the most commercially efficient, it is essential for maintaining team passion and preventing player fragmentation. He added that the studio’s small size—fewer than 20 people—allows them to remain insulated from industry pressures.
As the title approaches its tenth anniversary, Murray has addressed the long-term future of the game, acknowledging that it will eventually reach an end date for new content. While no specific date has been set, Murray expressed an interest in following the model of older titles like Quake, which continue to receive content decades after release. He emphasized a commitment to providing updates that bring joy to the community rather than strictly following a predetermined roadmap.
While continuing to support No Man’s Sky, Hello Games is also progressing on its next project, a fantasy survival game titled ‘Light No Fire’.
