Norovirus outbreaks in Czech spa towns

Overview

Multiple spa locations in the Czech Republic have reported norovirus outbreaks causing acute gastrointestinal symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

In Jeseník, the Priessnitzovy medicinal spas recorded 111 cases of illness, with symptoms increasing around August 7. Laboratory results confirmed the presence of noroviruses in one clinical sample. The facility implemented anti-epidemic measures such as increased disinfection and food testing, though the spa director noted that most cases remained mild.

By late August, the outbreak at the Priessnitz spas had stabilized, with the Regional Hygiene Station of the Olomouc Region reporting a total of 142 cases. While laboratory tests confirmed noroviruses in two patients, inspections of three prepared meals showed no evidence of foodborne pathogens. New cases have dropped significantly.

Simultaneously, the spa town of Luhačovice reported approximately 140 guests affected by a norovirus outbreak that had been spreading since mid-July. Weekly cases in the region fluctuated between ten and thirty. While laboratory tests confirmed the virus in some patients, health officials reported that testing of water and food samples had not yet yielded conclusive results regarding the exact source of the infection. Miroslav Procházka, director of the Zlín Region Hygiene Station, noted there is currently no evidence of widespread transmission across the entire town, as infections appear concentrated in specific facilities.

By September, the National Institute of Public Health reported that viral gastrointestinal infections recorded through August were the second highest in a decade, with nearly 9,500 cases nationwide. In Luhačovice, one spa facility was prohibited from accepting new patients following 170 confirmed cases. To curb transmission, the facility implemented stricter measures, such as replacing buffets with staff-served meals. Investigations have not identified water or food services as the source.
