North Macedonia transport infrastructure development
Overview
North Macedonia is prioritizing the modernization of European Corridors 8 and 10 to enhance regional connectivity. Regarding Corridor 8, the first section of the highway is complete, and the second section is expected to begin next year through cooperation with the European Union and the European Investment Bank. The railway component of Corridor 8 is divided into three sections; the second is currently under construction with a target completion date by the end of 2028. A procurement process has also begun for the third, most complex section, which will require extensive tunneling and bridge work.
In addition to Corridor 8, work has commenced on a high-speed railway for Corridor 10. North Macedonia is also collaborating with neighboring countries to expand border crossings and is working with Bulgaria on a joint intergovernmental agreement to construct a cross-border tunnel.
These developments complement ongoing regional efforts, such as addressing safety concerns on the Tetovo-Gostivar highway and the planned expressway connecting Radovish to the Bulgarian border. The government continues to focus on large-scale infrastructure projects to improve both domestic transit and international links.
