Northeast US heat wave extends into August

Overview

The heat wave that dominated the Northeast corridor from mid‑May through July continued unabated into mid‑July. A National Weather Service heat advisory issued on July 13 covered southern New England on July 14‑15, projecting heat‑index values near 100 °F in Suffolk County and urging residents—especially older adults, infants, outdoor workers and those without air‑conditioning—to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity, wear light clothing and use the Bourne cooling center.

The pattern persisted into early August. The Climate Prediction Center’s 6‑10‑day outlook (issued July 30) calls for above‑average temperatures across all six New England states from August 5‑9, with elevated humidity. Simultaneously, the region is expected to receive above‑normal precipitation, bringing scattered showers and occasional thunderstorms. Cities such as Portland, ME and Hartford, CT may see brief heavy rain that could cause temporary ponding on roads and reduced visibility. The added rain should ease drought concerns but may disrupt outdoor events, prompting residents to monitor local forecasts and plan activities accordingly.
