Northeastern US hunting season regulations

Overview

Regional hunting seasons for deer and black bear have commenced in the Northeastern United States.

In New York, the Southern Zone early bowhunting season is active from October 1 through November 20, 2026, preceding the regular firearms season starting November 21. Regulatory updates allowing crossbow use have seen significant adoption; during the 2025 bow season, crossbows accounted for approximately 55% of deer harvested. In 2025, the DEC estimated a statewide harvest of 227,032 deer, with 49,160 occurring during the bow season, including an estimated 10,120 in Chautauqua County.

In Pennsylvania, the statewide archery deer season began October 3, 2026, and runs through November 20, 2026, with a subsequent season scheduled from late December 2026 through January 2027. This marks the first year of expanded Sunday hunting on state game lands and state forests. The Pennsylvania Game Commission continues to issue guidance regarding Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), advising the use of full-body safety harnesses and fluorescent orange clothing.

In Maryland, the first segment of the muzzleloader deer season is scheduled for October 22–24. In Region B, hunters may use muzzleloaders for antlerless deer from October 26–31. Additionally, a statewide early muzzleloader season for sika deer is open from October 22–24, followed by an antlerless-only sika deer season from October 26–31. For the 2026-27 season, the statewide bag limit for antlered white-tailed deer is set at two, though hunters can purchase a Bonus Antlered Deer Stamp to allow for a third. An antler-point restriction remains in effect, requiring most harvested antlered deer to have at least three points.
