Notting Hill Carnival 60th anniversary

Overview

The Notting Hill Carnival in West London marked its 60th anniversary, celebrating six decades of Caribbean culture, music, and masquerade. The milestone event, which included the ‘UNLEASH’ presentation inspired by Caribbean folklore, was expected to attract over two million attendees.

To commemorate the anniversary, photographers Wayne Campbell and Wayne Crichlow released a collaborative photo book titled ‘Carnival of Resistance’. The project uses photography as a form of “visual activism” to document the history, migration, and cultural resistance of the Caribbean community behind the festival.

As the bank holiday weekend approached, weather forecasts indicated potential disruptions due to predicted thundery showers and heavy rain. Despite these forecasts, organizers noted that heavy rain has not historically stopped the celebrations, citing precedents from 2014, 2015, and 2018.

In preparation for the crowds, the London Ambulance Service (LAS) issued a call for responsible drinking. The agency highlighted a sharp rise in alcohol-related emergencies during the previous August bank holiday, noting a “73 percent increase in incidents on the Monday compared to the prior week.” Officials urged attendees to stay hydrated and look after one another to ensure emergency crews remain available for critical needs.

To mark the anniversary, the event also introduced new partnerships and digital content. Grace Foods UK returned as the official food and drink partner, and Spotify launched its ‘Carnival Sounds Live’ series. Data from Spotify highlighted a significant rise in Caribbean music consumption in the UK, noting that Soca has become the fastest-growing Caribbean genre in the region.
