Texas loses No. 1 ranking following Red River Rivalry upset

Overview

Texas maintained its No. 1 ranking in the AP Top 25 following a narrow 20-17 victory over Tennessee, entering a bye week undefeated. While the defense remained dominant—highlighted by Colin Simmons recording five sacks against Tennessee—the team faced internal challenges regarding offensive consistency and discipline. The offense ranked 111th nationally in explosive-play rate, and the team ranked 89th in penalties, averaging 6.3 flags per game. Head coach Steve Sarkisian emphasized the need for more effective system execution and accountability.

This period of stability ended on October 10 during the 122nd installment of the Red River Rivalry, where the unranked Oklahoma Sooners upset the No. 1 Texas Longhorns 27-24 at Cotton Bowl Stadium. The game was decided in the final moments when Oklahoma kicker Tate Sandell converted a 47-yard field goal as time expired.

Oklahoma’s victory was bolstered by significant special teams and defensive contributions, including a blocked punt return for a touchdown by Dakoda Fields and a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown by Peyton Bowen. This marked Oklahoma’s first win over an AP No. 1 ranked team since 2007. Despite the loss, Texas quarterback Arch Manning delivered a strong performance, throwing for 260 yards and three touchdowns, including a scoring connection with Jermaine Bishop Jr. to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.

Following the upset, Sarkisian addressed criticisms regarding the team’s running game and special teams struggles, stating he is not considering changes to his coaching staff or his role as offensive play caller.
