Open Cosmos satellite company expansion

Overview

The UK-based satellite company Open Cosmos has expanded its operational scope and financial resources. Initially, the company secured a role in supporting a national defence communications push, transitioning from Earth observation into the direct-to-device communications sector. CEO Rafel Jordà Siquier described the contract as a “stamp of approval” for the company’s strategy.

Subsequently, Open Cosmos secured €300 million in a Series C funding round led by Lightrock and ETF Partners. This investment, which included participation from the British National Security Strategic Investment Fund, the Institut Català de Finances (ICF), and Entrepreneurs First, has propelled the company to a “unicorn valuation” of over $1 billion.

The capital is intended to scale mass-manufacturing capabilities and accelerate the deployment of proprietary space infrastructure. Key projects include ConnectedCosmos, a sovereign Ka-band broadband constellation in Low Earth Orbit; OpenConstellation for Earth observation data; and DataCosmos. Utilizing four factories across the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, and Greece, the company currently maintains the capacity to manufacture one satellite per day. The funding will further support expansion in engineering, manufacturing, and software development, particularly within its Barcelona and Greek operations.
