Palangka Raya forest fire haze and health response

Overview

Forest and land fires in Palangka Raya have caused significant haze, leading to widespread respiratory health concerns. In response to high public demand, the Palangka Raya City Government expanded its mobile oxygen bus service to four units. These buses, staffed by medical personnel, provide free oxygen and inhalation therapy, as well as masks and vitamins, specifically targeting vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.

While heavy rainfall has recently begun to thin the haze and improve visibility in certain areas, air quality remains a critical issue. The Air Pollution Standard Index (ISPU) continues to be rated at a “Very Unhealthy” level, and officials advise residents to limit outdoor activities.

As of October 29, 2026, schools in Palangka Raya have resumed limited in-person learning for kindergarten, elementary, junior high, and non-formal education centers. To mitigate risks from PM2.5 concentrations, the Palangka Raya Education Office has implemented safety protocols: school hours will start at 07:30 WIB with shortened durations, outdoor activities must be strictly limited, and masks are required for students and staff. Acting Head of the Palangka Raya Education Office, Jayani, stated that these arrangements may change based on evolving air quality conditions. Schools are instructed to monitor official government data daily to prioritize essential learning while minimizing pollution exposure.
