Paramaribo infrastructure and drainage rehabilitation
Overview
Infrastructure maintenance and rehabilitation projects are being conducted in Paramaribo, Suriname, to improve urban drainage and road durability.
In mid-October, works were scheduled on Slangenhoutstraat to address sewerage and drainage vulnerabilities. These efforts are part of a larger Van ’t Hogerhuysstraat rehabilitation project that began in late August and is expected to span twenty months. Project manager Rodney Wongsosoeparto noted that workers are replacing outdated culverts at multiple locations to ensure a cohesive drainage system.
Simultaneously, the Ministry of Public Works and Spatial Planning initiated asphalting repairs on J. Lachmonstraat to address cracking, potholes, and rutting caused by heavy traffic and aging. These repairs aim to prevent structural damage from heavy rainfall.
As of October 20, Slangenhoutstraat is partially closed between Van ’t Hogerhuysstraat and Hernhutterstraat for essential sewage system upgrades. Conducted by Kuldipsingh Infra N. V., the work involves replacing culverts under both Slangenhoutstraat and Calcuttastraat to mitigate flooding. Wongsosoeparto stated that addressing the sewage system is a “critical prerequisite” for the project’s continued progress. The current focus is on the longest section of the sewage line in Slangenhoutstraat, involving at least eight specific intervention sites.
Following these works, the project is scheduled to expand from Molenpad toward the Wijdenboschbrug. Kuldipsingh Infra N. V. is coordinating with utility companies, local businesses, and residents to manage traffic impacts, with a full reopening of the affected section expected by October 22.
