Paricatuba community-based tourism initiative

Overview

The village of Paricatuba in Iranduba, Amazonas, has launched a new community-based tourism (TBC) initiative through the ‘Viva Paricatuba’ project. The project aims to preserve local history and stimulate the regional economy by highlighting the village's historical ruins, including an old church, morgue, and preventorium.

Key developments include the inauguration of a Museum Room within the ruins to house artifacts and the ‘Cotidiano’ exhibition, as well as new signage to identify historical sites. Cultural components of the launch feature a photography exhibition by Bruno Mello, a large open-air mural titled ‘Muro Parikás’ by artist Waldemir Nascimento, a dedicated website, and a comic book titled ‘Paricatuba, a Vila das Mil Histórias’.

As part of the initiative, a new documentary has been produced to capture the history and transformations of the village. Developed by Impact Hub Manaus through the Paricatuba Lab, the film focuses on preserving community identity through the personal accounts of residents, such as former leprosarium patient Dona Josina, her granddaughter Dona Tequinha, and local merchant Seu Manuel. Project coordinator Thalia Galdino stated that the documentary seeks to show how the territory has been “redefined by those who live there,” connecting the historical origins of the area to its modern evolution.
