Parole of Moch Subchi Azal Tsani in Indonesia

Moch Subchi Azal Tsani, known as Bechi, was released on parole in August 2025 after serving part of a seven-year sentence for sexual assault committed at the Shiddiqiyyah Islamic boarding school in Jombang, East Java. His initial arrest in 2022 required a massive police operation to manage supporters.

The Indonesian Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Affairs stated the early release followed existing regulations regarding sentence reductions. While on parole, Bechi is subject to strict supervision, including monthly reporting to the Bapas Class I Malang office until 2028 and restrictions on leaving his current regency.

Following the release, Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated he would coordinate with the technical ministry regarding the matter, noting he was not previously aware of the specific details of the parole. The Directorate General of Corrections clarified that the release is a conditional parole rather than a full discharge.

Christo Victor Nixon Toar, Head of Malang Class I Prison, clarified that the remission process adhered to existing regulations and was not based on special treatment. Bechi received approximately 19 months of sentence reductions, totaling 16 months and 105 days.

The release has drawn criticism from Komnas Perempuan. Vice Chair Ratna Batara Munti stated that a “lack of transparency regarding the change in status risks re-traumatizing victims and undermining public trust in the handling of sexual violence cases.” Critics have also noted that the timing of the release may conflict with the spirit of the Sexual Violence Crimes Law (UU TPKS), specifically regarding the calculation of the required two-thirds of the sentence served.
