Peru judicial outreach, training, and upgrades
Overview
In late July, the Superior Court of Justice in Tumbes launched a mobile “Campaña de Difusión de Derechos y Justicia Itinerante” in the Casitas district, providing residents with information on legal rights and court access. The same day, the Defensoría del Pueblo in Trujillo held a public fair to mark its 29th anniversary, offering guidance on human rights. Capacity-building continued with a technical workshop in Loreto to harmonize protection measures for gender-based violence victims, and training in Tumbes for school peace judges on violence prevention and mental health.
In early August, regional courts marked the Day of the Judge with various initiatives regarding ethics, independence, and AI. The Tacna Superior Court announced a new Regional Appeals Chamber for flagrancy cases, while the Superior Court of Justice of Lambayeque began technical design work for the San José courthouse renovation. In Huaraz, informational fairs were held to raise awareness about preventing violence against women.
Building on these efforts, the Superior Court of Justice of Lambayeque has provided 66 computers to peace judges to bridge the technological gap and continues work on technical files for the recovery of the San José judicial headquarters. In Cusco, 62 women leaders received training as judicial guides to act as links between citizens and the justice system, focusing on gender equality and violence eradication. Additionally, community groups in Santa were trained to recognize and report risks to improve neighborhood safety.
