PLN electrical infrastructure maintenance in Sulawesi

PT PLN (Persero) has implemented scheduled rotating power outages across various regions in Sulawesi, Indonesia, to conduct electrical infrastructure maintenance.

Initially, maintenance efforts focused on Makassar and surrounding areas in South, Southeast, and West Sulawesi. The company deployed over 230 technicians to work on networks, substations, and transformers to ensure long-term supply reliability. Officials noted these outages were strictly for facility maintenance and were not caused by the El Nino phenomenon or low hydroelectric water levels.

On September 6, 2026, rolling outages affected the Mamuju and Pasangkayu regions. In Mamuju and Tobadak, interruptions began at 10:30 WITA, impacting Simboro, Kepulauan, Tapalang, and West Tapalang, with maintenance extending into inland districts like Kalumpang, Bonehau, Mambi, Mehalaan, Tabulahan, and Aralle through the evening. In Pasangkayu and Central Mamuju, outages began at 10:00 WITA in Bambaira, Bambalamotu, and Sarjo, later affecting Budong-Budong, Karossa, and Topoyo, with activities scheduled to conclude around midnight.

Simultaneously, the PLN Unit Induk Distribusi Sulawesi Selatan, Sulawesi Tenggara, dan Sulawesi Barat (UID Sulselrabar) implemented rolling load management in Makassar and surrounding areas to maintain system stability. These rotation-based outages last between one and four hours per session. While the 125 MW Jeneponto Coal-Fired Power Plant (PLTU) has returned to operation, General Manager Edyansyah noted that some power plants still require optimization, meaning supply capacity has not yet fully returned to normal levels.

On September 11, 2026, the PLN Sungguminasa Customer Service Unit (ULP) scheduled load adjustments for the night in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi. These adjustments are expected to affect parts of Tombolalang, Bonto-Bontoa, and Batang Kaluku, as well as various streets and public facilities. PLN stated that this schedule is an initial estimate that may change as the Sulbagsel electrical system undergoes a recovery transition.
