PNL Gorj establishes new leadership nucleus

Internal friction within the National Liberal Party (PNL) in Gorj, Romania, escalated from criticisms of leadership decisions to a formal change in command.

Initially, university professor Dorel Chirițescu criticized PNL leader Ion Iordache, describing the exclusion of three members from the county’s Political Bureau as an ‘execution’. Chirițescu argued that the party was discarding qualified individuals for ‘puerile’ reasons and warned that prioritizing internal power struggles could drive voters toward extremism.

Following these tensions, Ion Iordache resigned from his position as Deputy. This triggered a leadership transition, with several potential successors being discussed, including retired general Ioan Sîrbu, Iulian Popescu, Daniel Burlan, Gheorghe Pecingină, and Dan Vîlceanu. Local leaders had called for the central party in Bucharest to clarify its intentions, emphasizing the need for a leader who brings ‘new energy and determination’ to the county.

In response to the instability, the National Political Bureau of the PNL has decided to establish a leadership nucleus to coordinate activities for the PNL Gorj organization. This new group will be coordinated by Deputy Gigel Știrbu and includes Virgil Popescu, Dumitru Vulpe, Dorel Chirițescu, and Ioan Sîrbu.

Ioan Sîrbu, a reserve general and former interim president of PNL Gorj, characterized this restructuring as a ‘new beginning’ based on unity, dialogue, and mutual respect. He stated his intention to build a united team to attract members who believe in liberal values and the Gorj region. This development follows a period of leadership changes, including the tenure of Ion Iordache, after certain party congress decisions were suspended by a court.
