Poland military aircraft and defense procurement

Overview

Poland is expanding its air defense capabilities through the procurement of advanced American fighter jets. The government plans to purchase 32 F-35A aircraft, doubling its existing fleet to 64. Deputy Minister of National Defence Cezary Tomczyk previously noted that the decision was based on jet quality, stating Poland has transitioned from a “mere client to a strategic partner of the United States.”

As of late August 2026, the total number of F-35A aircraft permanently stationed at the 32nd Tactical Aviation Base in Łask has reached eight. This follows the arrival of five additional units, nicknamed ‘Husarz’ and identified by serial numbers 3512 through 3516, which arrived after a flight stopover in the Azores. The delivery ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. While eight jets are in Poland, another eight are at Ebbing Air Force Base for personnel training, with the remaining 16 to be delivered from Cameri, Italy, by 2029.

In September 2026, Poland and the United States signed a $4 billion agreement under the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program. This agreement provides credit guarantees to facilitate the purchase of American military equipment, bringing the total FMF financing for Poland to over $19 billion. These funds support the modernization of the Polish armed forces, including F-35 and F-16 jets, Apache helicopters, Abrams tanks, HIMARS, and the Patriot missile defense system. Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that the agreement reflects “deepening defense cooperation” between the two nations.
