Police shooting of graduate in Port Harcourt

Overview

On August 27, 2026, Anthony Obodo, a 22-year-old University of Port Harcourt graduate, was fatally shot at the Agip-Ada George Junction in Port Harcourt. While police reports described the incident as a gunshot occurring during an altercation, eyewitnesses alleged that officers pursued Obodo’s vehicle and opened fire after he failed to stop.

The shooting led to significant unrest, including an attack on Corporal Alfred Louis by an angry mob and protests by local youths involving road blockades. Obodo’s father, Princewill Obodo, accused the officers of being “paid to kill his son.”

Following an orderly room trial, the Rivers State Police Command dismissed three officers for their culpability. Inspector Solomon Nworgu, who allegedly fled the scene, has been declared a deserter and remains at large. Assistant Superintendent of Police Fabian Kpeanabari was also dismissed, pending ratification by the Police Service Commission.

In recent legal developments, Corporal Alfred Louis and Police Constable Michael Ejekwu were remanded at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre. Chief Magistrate Helen Hardy ordered the remand after charges were not read during proceedings on September 4. The court has adjourned the matter until September 22, when the officers are expected to enter their pleas. Chinedu Maduba, Chairman of the Port Harcourt Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, expressed concern regarding why only two of the officers in custody were presented before the court.
