Polish parliamentary immunity disputes
Entities: European Union · Wojciech Król · European Public Prosecutor Office · Laura Kövesi · Adam Dziedzic
Overview
In early July 2026 prosecutors asked the Senate to strip Senator Marcin Zawiła of immunity over a municipal‑housing scandal. Two weeks later the Senate rejected a motion to lift Senator Wadim Tyszkiewicz’s immunity in a defamation suit, while the General Prosecutor sought Sejm approval to remove MP Łukasz Mejza’s immunity over alleged false invoicing in EU‑funded training projects.
On 22 July the Senate again voted against Mejza’s request to lift Tyszkiewicz’s immunity, and the prosecutor renewed his request to the Sejm to suspend Mejza’s immunity for the same EU‑project investigation. The following day the Prosecutor General submitted a request to the Sejm for permission to detain MP Michał Woś, who had previously renounced his immunity but remains protected unless the chamber consents. Woś is accused of exceeding his powers as former state secretary for the prison service and of ignoring multiple summons. These actions extend the ongoing contest over the scope and removal of parliamentary immunity in Poland.
The pattern continued on 29 July when the Sejm voted overwhelmingly to lift the immunity of Civic Coalition MP Wojciech Król after a request from the European Public Prosecutor Office. The EPPO alleges Król accepted bribes exceeding 1.4 million PLN related to a 27 million‑zł EU‑funded tram project. While the chamber approved the removal of his immunity, a separate vote rejected a proposal to detain and temporarily arrest him. In the same session, the Sejm declined to lift the immunity of PSL MP Adam Dziedzic. The episode underscores the rarity of parliamentary immunity removals in Poland, now driven by EU‑level anti‑corruption investigations.
